24 HBCUs Where Minimum Wage is Sufficient

Years ago, it wasn't unheard of to "work your way through college."  Lincoln University and Howard Law School alumnus Thurgood Marshall reportedly worked as a dining car waiter on the B&O Railroad (with a uniform that was too small) to pay for his education.   But is it still possible to "work your way through college"?   The answer is "Yes!" though not nearly as easy as it  used to be.   The Hundred-Seven has searched through more than 100 HBCU websites and created a list of colleges where a minimum wage job will cover tuition for a year. ** The potential earnings were calculated by using the local minimum wage and assuming a student works at least 20 hours per week each semester and 40 hours a week during the summer.   There are both bachelor's degree and associate's degree conferring colleges on the list.   With the exception of Shorter College (a private institution) all of the listings refer to in-state tuition costs.  This means students must be a resident of the state where the college is located or eligible to receive a tuition waiver.  Check out this list of HBCUs that offer tuition waivers

**NOTE:  This information refers to IN-STATE/RESIDENT tuition ONLY.  It does NOT include fees unless a college website combined mandatory fees when reporting tuition costs.  It does not include room and board, books, transportation or other costs a student may incur.  Some colleges list tuition rates by the credit hour.  For those colleges the cost of 15 credit hours was calculated.  Keep in mind, that the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, but some states like Maryland, Ohio and Arkansas have a rate that is higher.  Additionally, the University of the Virgin Islands, which offers residents free tuition to residents, was not included on the list.   Of special note, private Paul Quinn College in Dallas requires students to participate in its own Work Study Program

A list of other colleges where a significant portion of tuition can be covered by a minimum wage job along with the entire data set is available here.  Out-of-state cost comparisons are available here.
